GST Registration
GST Registration Process in India
GST registration applies to all goods and services, except Petroleum products. GST (Goods and Service Tax) is a consolidated, merged tax. The entire country is now governed by a uniform taxation system. This replaces the service tax, excise tax, VAT, entertainment taxes, luxury taxes, octroi and CST.
The GST registration process is entirely online in India. No manual intervention is required, nor are physical submissions. GST Registration has a very simple process.
GST exemption limits were previously set at Rs 20 lakhs per business and service. With the latest amendment, businesses with a turnover up to 40 lakh rupees are now exempt from GST. Also, businesses with a revenue of up to Rs 1,5 crore can choose the Composition Scheme where they pay only 1%.
For services, the exemption limit is still set at 20 lakhs. Service providers with a turnover of up to 50 lakhs rupees can also opt for the composition scheme and pay only 6% tax.
It is therefore mandatory to register for GST only when the turnover (sales), of a trader, manufacturer, business, individual, professional, etc. exceeds INR 20 Lakh. You can also opt to register for GST if your sales are below INR 20 Lakh if you want to benefit from Input Tax Credit. All persons who purchase or sell services or goods interstate must also register for GST. The above limits do not apply.
