What is the Import Export Code (IEC)?
Import Export Code is a 10-digit number that has a permanent validity. It’s issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, under Ministry of Commerce and Industry to anyone who can be trusted with import/export. This code is required for importers and exporters to benefit from DGFT exports, customs or Export Promotion Council.
When will the Import Export code (IEC) be required?
In the following cases, the Import Export Code is required:
- Customs officials need this information when an importer needs to clear his shipments.
- Banks need the money that an importer sends abroad via banks.
- The customs port will need the exporter’s shipment when he sends it.
- If an exporter receives foreign currency directly in his bank account, then the bank will require IEC.
How to get an import export license
Your IEC registration is valid for only one year and must be updated annually.
Banks also require the Import Export Code (IEC) when sending money overseas. Exporters can apply online for IEC Code through Chartered Choice and receive their import export license the same day.
How to register IEC online?
The DGFT is the governing body that regulates the grant of import export licenses, keeps a record and makes rules for the way to grant the certificates.

You don’t have to be registered to apply for an import export code. Individuals can also apply. IEC Certificate can also be called Export License, Import License. IE Code, IEC Code, EXIM License. All of these terms have the same meaning.
Important: According to the latest notification from the DGFT you need to renew/update your IEC License each year between April to June.

Once issued, an online Import Export Certificate is valid forever and does not expire. It must be updated / renewed online each year. The IEC code can be used across the country and in all branches or factories of an organization.
Importers are required to comply with certain requirements
All importers that wish to import goods into India must have a valid IEC Code. All relevant customs documentation must include the IEC Code. You will be required to provide a valid IEC registration to your bank in order to make payments abroad.
Exporters are required to comply with certain requirements
All exporters of goods from India must have a valid IEC Code. The IEC code must be cited in all relevant customs documentation. You will be required to register with the IEC to your bank when you receive money from overseas from your clients.

Approval
